LEARNING TO WEAVE

If you've always wanted to learn to weave, but didn't know where to begin, this is the class for you.
Learn what hand weaving is, what can be woven, and how looms work.
Become acquainted with small tools used by weavers, as well as the vocabulary of weaving terms needed to understand the process. Learn about warp and weft yarns, and how their size, weight, elasticity and fibre content relate to specific projects and fabrics.
Learn how to prepare (measure) the warp using a warping board.
This course is recommended as a prerequisite to other weaving courses for those who are new to weaving, and for the New Master Weaver Program for Olds College.

COLOUR AND DESIGN IN WEAVING |

The correct pattern and choice of warp and weft colours enable weavers to produce different results with the same warp. Project will be a colour study.
A basic workshop (students must know how to warp a loom and supply their own loom).

LINEN AND LACE |

|
This workshop is an opportunity to learn how to weave beautiful lace fabrics using one of the most beautiful fibers. Swedish lace, Bronson Lace, Huck Lace and Gauze will be covered. The project is a small wall hanging or runner.
This class is for intermediate weavers. Students must supply their own loom. |

FINISHING TECHNIQUES FOR WOOL FABRICS |

Wool fabrics can be manipulated to produce a specific desired hand, dependent on the type of finishing used. Intended for beginner weavers, this last step will give the cloth the professional look you desire.
Students supply prewoven wool samples (draft will be provided).

BEAD LENO |

|
Love the look of leno but do not like pick up. Bead leno enables weavers to produce a similar fabric in half the time. Project is a small wall hanging.
This class is for intermediate weavers. Students must supply their own loom.

SURFACE WEAVES |

|
Explore ways to enhance the novelty yarn and use the least amount to obtain the desired look. No project - samples will be produced.
This class is for intermediate weavers. Students must supply their own loom.

INTRODUCTION TO MULTI-SHAFT WEAVING |

Students will choose an 8 or a 12 shaft twill draft.
We will explore the expanded twill structures available and examine the versatility of the threading.
This class is for advanced weavers. Students must supply an 8 or 12 shaft loom.

SEWING TECHNIQUES FOR HANDWOVEN FABRIC |

Tips and tricks for sewing your handwoven fabric. The student will need some samples of their handwoven fabric to practice techniques.
This class is for beginner weavers or weavers interested in cutting and sewing their fabric into garments. A sewing machine is required.

INTRODUCTION TO DRAFTING WEAVES |
The ability to create and edit your own drawdowns enables weavers to customize designs.
Both manual drawdowns and/or computer generated drawdowns using WeavePoint will be explored.
This class is suitable for both beginners and intermediate weavers who want a better understanding of weave structure.

DRAFTING BEYOND THE BASIC DRAFT |
Learn how to create block drafts and work with multiharness drafts.
Drawdowns will be created manually.
Blended draft technique will be explored.
This class is suitable for intermediate to advanced weavers.
